Maundy Relief works "at the coal face" of need responding immediately to poverty, - physical, mental emotional and spiritual, - within the community and providing all the basic needs for living.

It deals with anyone who "falls beneath the net" of social policy and before other services "kick-in". It thereafter works very closely with these services.

If there is nowhere else to turn then try Maundy Relief.

The Emergency Service provides food, small grants and basic needs by means of a helpline and through referral from local agencies statutory and voluntary, service administrators and appropriate and responsible adults. Additionally a self-referral scheme operates.

The building was built in 1720. It was previously used as a hostel for men, (Shanks), a Co-operative Society, and a coffin makers establishment. In 1870 the premises at No 31 Abbey Street were licensed as "The Lark Inn" and the landlord lived at No 29. Since then it has had several residents and several functions including operating as a tile shop and a wedding dress shop. The premises at No 31 are still licensed.

The Charity "Maundy Relief" took up the tenancy of No 29 on May 26th 1998 and of No 31 on June 1st 2000.

The Charity was co-founded by: Dorothy Ann McGregor, The Rev. Len Singleton and Alan Freeman.
